Introduction

Early Life and Education

Sridhar Vembu was born in 1968 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He graduated in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras and later with a PhD. from Princeton University. He started as a wireless systems engineer at Qualcomm in San Diego, California. He received a good salary, and he created a career, but something wasn’t right for him. That brought him to call for entrepreneurship and had a desire to start his business. This motivation caused him to quit Qualcomm.

Sridhar Vembu’s Personal Life - Successful Founder, Unsuccessful Marriage 

Sridhar Vembu married to Pramila Srinivasan in the late 1990s. They had a son, Siddhu, who has Autism disorder, and this played a key role in the personal battles of the couple. Pramila herself was also involved in the family’s business. But their marriage fell apart starting in 2020 after Vembu, controversially, relocated from the United States to rural India.

 

 

Divorce War and Financial Allegations

The couple continued to struggle through the complicated dynamics of their personal life, and their legal fight heated up. Pramila Srinivasan moved the court seeking dissolution of marriage along with decree for the division of marital properties. 

In addition to the divorce case, Pramila alleged that Vembu hid assets, alleging he secretly transferred shares and wealth to other entities to prevent them from becoming part of the settlement.

 

Key Charges and Legal Claims:

Financial Malpractice: Pramila accuses Vembu of conducting illicit money transfers to deprive her of a thirds-share in their property at the time of the divorce. Vembu also transferred millions of dollars in his wife's name without her knowledge, including stock in Zoho to family members, she alleges. This, she claims, was in order to protect Zoho’s wealth from being part of the divorce settlement. 

Zoho’s Wealth: Vembu, however, has refuted these charges, and argued he had not taken any financial step to escape sharing of wealth. He had argued that the ownership of Zoho had been arranged years ago and had not been changed to help him personally.

 

Entrepreneurial Journey of Sridhar Vembu

He co-founded AdventNet with his brothers in 1996. They were on a mission to change the face of the software industry. 

Their initial product, Web NMS, was aimed at assisting businesses to digitally organize operations. The product received lots of attention, especially after they dominated big competitors, such as HP, at a US tech fair. 

By 1998, the sales had increased to 6 crore INR and by 2000, AdventNet had attracted a huge client from Cisco that took their sales to 50 crore INR. That all went just fine until the year 2000. The early 2000s brought unexpected headwinds.
