Before putting money into any company, one question matters more than most investors realize: how is this company funded — with its own capital, or with borrowed money? A business that relies too heavily on debt can look profitable in good times but struggle badly the moment interest rates rise or revenue slows down. This is exactly what the debt-to-capital ratio helps you uncover.
It's one of the simplest yet most revealing solvency ratios in fundamental analysis. It tells you, in one number, what fraction of a company's total capital — debt plus equity — is made up of debt. Lenders use it before approving loans. Investors use it before buying stock. Company owners use it to track their own financial health.
What Is the Debt-to-Capital Ratio?
Definition - The debt-to-capital ratio is a solvency and capital-structure ratio that shows what percentage of a company's total capital is financed through debt, rather than equity. It is calculated as total debt divided by total capital (total debt + total shareholder equity).
Important Note:
This is NOT a liquidity ratio. Liquidity ratios, like the current ratio, measure a company's ability to pay short-term obligations. The debt-to-capital ratio instead measures long-term financial leverage and capital structure — how the business is funded overall.
A company can raise capital in two broad ways:
• Debt — loans, credit lines, bonds, mortgages. This must be repaid with interest, regardless of how the business performs.
• Equity — money from shareholders/owners. There's no repayment obligation, but ownership (and future profit share) gets diluted.
The debt-to-capital ratio tells you the balance between these two. A company funded mostly by debt carries more financial risk, because interest and principal payments are due whether or not the business is doing well. A company funded mostly by equity has more breathing room during a downturn, but its owners give up a larger share of future profits.

Total Debt includes all interest-bearing liabilities, both short-term and long-term:
• Short-term and long-term borrowings
• Credit card and working capital loans
• Vehicle and equipment loans
• Outstanding lines of credit
• Mortgages and long-term debentures/bonds
Total Shareholder Equity is the company's net worth — share capital plus reserves and surplus, as reported on the balance sheet. Both figures are available directly from a company's balance sheet, usually under "Equity and Liabilities."

Step-by-Step Calculation With an Example
Let's use a simple hypothetical example (numbers illustrative only). Scenario: Rohit owns Vision Construction, a mid-sized firm, with the following outstanding debts:

Step 1: Add up total debt → ₹12.64 crore
Step 2: Add debt + equity to get total capital → ₹12.64 crore + ₹20 crore = ₹32.64 crore
Step 3: Divide debt by total capital → 12.64 ÷ 32.64 ≈ 0.39, or 39%
Interpretation: Vision Construction is financed roughly 39% by debt and 61% by equity. Since more than half the capital comes from equity, the business is relatively conservatively funded — a lender or investor would generally view this as manageable leverage, though industry context still matters (see benchmark table below).

Important Correction: The ratio can never exceed 1 (100%), because debt can never be more than total capital by definition (debt is always a portion of debt + equity). If you ever see a "ratio" quoted above 1 or above 100%, that number is not the debt-to-capital ratio — it may be a Debt-to-Equity ratio (which can exceed 1) being mislabeled.

How these figures validate the benchmark table above: Infosys's ~8% ratio sits comfortably within the "IT Services 0–0.25" range; NTPC's ~0.52–0.57 sits within the "Infrastructure up to ~0.60" range; Reliance's diversified, cash-generative balance sheet keeps it conservative despite its scale; Tata Steel's ~47% is typical of a capital-intensive manufacturer. Bharti Airtel, a telecom operator, currently runs at approximately 0.47 (47%) debt-to-capital — broadly consistent with the telecom benchmark, and trending down as the sector deleverages after several years of aggressive network investment.

A very high ratio can indicate a heavily indebted company — one that may struggle to service debt if revenue drops. A low-to-moderate ratio (in context of its industry) generally signals a more resilient balance sheet.

Lenders review this ratio before approving credit. A company already carrying excess debt relative to its capital base is a higher default risk, and lenders may reject the application or demand a higher interest rate/collateral.

Investor's takeaway: Company B shows a slightly higher ROE, but a large part of that return may be coming from financial leverage rather than genuine operating efficiency. - Retain earnings instead of distributing them fully, to build up equity organically.
- Raise equity capital (via investors or rights issues) if debt is growing faster than the business can support.
- Avoid new debt for non-essential expansion when the ratio is already elevated relative to industry peers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing Debt-to-Capital with Debt-to-Equity. They use similar inputs but different denominators — Debt-to-Equity can exceed 1 (100%); Debt-to-Capital cannot.
- Assuming a "good" ratio of 1 to 1.5. This is mathematically impossible for debt-to-capital — the ratio is capped at 1 (100%) by definition.
- Comparing banks or NBFCs to non-financial companies using this ratio. Financial institutions have fundamentally different capital structures and are assessed using different metrics (like capital adequacy ratio).
- Judging a company using this ratio alone, without checking profitability, interest coverage, and cash flow.
- Ignoring industry context — a 45% ratio might be excellent for an IT company but concerning for an FMCG company, and perfectly normal for an infrastructure company.
Limitations of the Debt-to-Capital Ratio
- Accounting-based, not market-based: It relies on historical cost figures from the balance sheet, which may not reflect the current market value of debt or equity.
- Doesn't capture repayment ability: A company can have a "healthy" ratio but still struggle with cash flow to service that debt — this is better assessed via the Interest Coverage Ratio.
- Ignores debt quality: Not all debt carries the same risk — short-term working capital debt behaves very differently from long-term infrastructure debt.
