Gold Resale Value Calculator - Check What Your Old Gold Jewellery Is Worth Today

A gold resale value calculator tells you the estimated cash value of your old gold jewellery, coins, or bars before you walk into a jeweller or gold-buying store. Enter today's 24K gold rate, the weight of your item in grams, and its purity (24K, 22K, 20K, 18K, or 14K), and the calculator instantly shows the metal value, the typical jeweller deduction, and your final estimated resale price — the same formula gold buyers use, so you know what a fair offer looks like before you negotiate.

How Is Gold Resale Value Calculated?

Gold resale value = Weight (grams) × Purity (%) × Today's Gold Rate per gram − Jeweller Deduction. First, the calculator finds your item's pure gold content by multiplying its weight by its purity factor (24K = 99.9%, 22K = 91.6%, 20K = 83.3%, 18K = 75%, 14K = 58.5%). This gives the metal value. Jewellers then subtract a deduction — usually 2% to 10% — to cover testing, refining, and margin, arriving at the final resale amount you're paid.

Gold Resale Value Formula

Metal Value = Gold Weight (g) × Purity Factor × 24K Gold Rate (₹/gram)
Deduction Amount = Metal Value × Jeweller Deduction (%)
Resale Value = Metal Value − Deduction Amount

Worked Example

Suppose today's 24K gold rate is ₹11,000/gram, you have a 20-gram bangle in 22K (91.6% purity), and the jeweller charges a 4% deduction:
Metal Value = 20 × 0.916 × ₹11,000 = ₹2,01,520
Deduction (4%) = ₹8,061
Estimated Resale Value = ₹1,93,459

Gold Purity Chart: Karat to Percentage (Used in the Calculator)

Karat Purity % BIS Number Common Use
24K 99.9% 999 Coins, bars, investment gold (too soft for daily-wear jewellery)
22K 91.6% 916 Most traditional Indian jewellery, bangles, chains
20K 83.3% 833 Some antique and regional jewellery
18K 75.0% 750 Diamond and gemstone-studded jewellery
14K 58.5% 585 Western-style and lightweight jewellery

A genuine BIS-hallmarked piece carries the BIS triangle mark, the purity grade (e.g. 916), and a 6-character Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. Always verify these before assuming a purity value — you can check any HUID on the BIS Care app.

Why Is Resale Value Lower Than the Purchase Price?

When you buy jewellery, the bill includes the gold value plus making charges (3%–25%), wastage (2%–7%), and 3% GST. None of these are refunded at resale — buyers pay only for the gold content, not the craftsmanship or tax already paid. That's why a piece that cost ₹1,20,000 to buy may resell for closer to ₹95,000–₹1,00,000 at the same day's gold rate.

Component Included When Buying? Included at Resale?
Gold metal value Yes Yes
Making charges (3–25%) Yes No
Wastage (2–7%) Yes No
3% GST Yes Not refunded
Jeweller deduction (2–10%) No Yes

How to Use the Gold Resale Value Calculator

  • Enter today's 24K gold rate per gram (check IBJA or your local jeweller's board — rates are revised twice daily).
  • Weigh your gold on a digital scale, ideally after removing stones, meenakari, or non-gold attachments.
  • Select the purity shown on the hallmark — 24K, 22K, 20K, 18K, or 14K.
  • Set the jeweller deduction % (typically 2%–10%, depending on the buyer).
  • Click Calculate to see the Metal Value, Deduction Amount, and Estimated Resale Value instantly.

5 Tips to Get the Best Resale Price for Old Gold

  • Check the live gold rate the same day you sell — rates move daily and even a ₹50/gram gap changes your total noticeably.
  • Insist on a BIS-hallmarked purity test using XRF or acid testing, done in front of you where possible.
  • Get an itemised receipt showing weight, tested purity, rate used, and deduction — not a single lump-sum figure.
  • Compare 2–3 buyers (jewellers, certified gold-buying companies, banks) before accepting an offer.
  • Sell during high-rate periods if you can wait — festival and wedding-season demand can lift prices slightly.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides an estimated resale value based on purity, weight, and deduction inputs you provide. Actual payout may vary by jeweller, purity test results, hallmark status, embedded stones, wastage policy, and same-day market conditions. Always confirm the live gold rate and get an itemised receipt before selling.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gold Resale Value

How do I calculate the resale value of old gold jewellery?

Multiply the gold's weight in grams by its purity percentage (e.g. 91.6% for 22K) and by today's 24K gold rate per gram to get the metal value. Then subtract the jeweller's deduction (usually 2%–10%) to get the final resale value.

What is the difference between the resale value of 22 K and 24 K gold?

24K gold is 99.9% pure and 22K gold is 91.6% pure. For the same weight, 24K always resells for more than 22K because it contains more actual gold — 22K jewellery is worth about 92% of what the same weight in 24K would fetch.

Why is my gold's resale value lower than what I paid for it?

The purchase price included making charges, wastage, and GST, none of which are recovered at resale. Buyers pay only for the gold content at the prevailing rate, so resale value is almost always lower than the original bill amount.

How much deduction do jewellers charge when buying back gold?

Typical deductions range from 2% to 10% of the metal value, covering testing, refining, and margin. Reputable buyers and certified gold-buying companies tend to charge on the lower end of that range and show it as a separate line on the receipt.

Does this gold resale value calculator give the exact amount a jeweller will pay?

It gives a close estimate based on the formula jewellers themselves use. The actual payout can vary slightly depending on the buyer's tested purity result, local market rate at the time of sale, and whether stones or non-gold parts are deducted from the weight.

How do I know the purity of my gold jewellery?

Check for a BIS hallmark — a triangle mark with a purity number (999, 916, 833, 750, or 585) and a 6-character HUID code. You can verify the HUID on the BIS Care app. If there's no hallmark, get the item tested at a certified assaying centre before relying on the stated purity.

Is gold resale value the same in every city?

No. While the international gold price is common, local 22K/24K gram rates vary slightly city to city based on local demand, taxes, and dealer margins, so always check your city's current rate before calculating.

Do gold coins or bars resell better than jewellery of the same weight?

Generally yes. Coins and bars are typically higher purity (24K/999) with no making charges built into their original price, so a larger share of their value converts directly to resale value compared with fashioned jewellery of the same weight.
